Jesus answers the lawyer that the main thing in life is found in the Scriptures. The lawyer remembers that the Scriptures say that the main thing in life is to love God and neighbor. Jesus confirms his answer and says that this indeed is the main thing and the way to life in all its fullness. I think we can sum up what Jesus was saying to the lawyer like this – the main thing is:
1. To love God unreservedly
2. To love people unconditionally
3. To live life unselfishly
