Branding Committee Update – July 2019
What is Branding?
“Branding” is a name, term, sign, symbol, design, or a combination of these, that is intended to identify the goods and services of one business, or group of businesses, and to differentiate them from those of competitors”.
“If the church were a car, what kind of car would it be?” If you’ve never asked yourself that particular question, get ready, you will be asked for an answer soon. Currently we are working with GRIT, a local marketing firm, to better understand the current culture of Aldersgate Church, those who attend, our direction, and the way the community sees us – or doesn’t. GRIT will be providing each of us with a survey asking many questions. You may find some of the questions seem strange, but they will provide them with great insight as to how each of us thinks the church is viewed within the community, how we want it to be viewed, and how we can best share that story. Therefore, we need your opinions and are counting on your participation, transparency and honesty.
When Aldersgate began the process of Growing Effective Churches (G.E.C.), we received a report from “Mystery Worshippers”. As you may recall, the most unsettling part of that report was that we were NOT easily found. Shockingly, some of our retail neighbors; such as Sheetz, CVS, and Panera Bread, did not even know who, or where we were. As if that weren’t enough, at the time of the “Mystery Worshippers” if you would have conducted an Internet search for “Aldersgate UMC York”, it would have taken you right to the Mechanicsburg and Mifflinburg churches, not us! That is until very recently! (Thank you to our Webmaster!)
Any organization understands it is imperative to be seen and known by the community. And therefore, we need your help to revitalize the spirit and outreach of our congregation. As a part of our GEC process, we are investigating a name and logo change. Over the past few months, several name suggestions have been offered for consideration and are being reviewed. Please continue to offer your suggestions by emailing them to [email protected] On the other hand, one of the reasons the Branding Committee connected with GRIT was because they suggested that we may not need to create a new name, but rather a new way to tell our story that others may know who we are, why we are here and what exactly is “Aldersgate York”. That said, there is an equal possibility that we will decide not to change our name.
Ultimately, please remember whether Aldersgate decides to keep the name and simply learns how to express our story better, or change the name and/or appearance, we are still the same family. As all the dust settles, we continue to look forward to a future where the telling of our story will help us to share His Story and the Good News, and with the Lord’s blessing, our building will be busting at the seams. What a joy that will be and a fantastic problem to encounter.
A link to the Survey mentioned above will be in your email soon, if you have not already received it. If you prefer, paper copies will be available in the church office. Please help us to build up our foundation, that we may once again be the place where people come to Know, Live, and Share JESUS.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Todd Kurl or the Church Office.
